Sunflame CH Rapid Auto-Clean 90 DX Kitchen Chimney

At number 11 we have the Sunflame CH Rapid Auto-Clean 90 DX. This is a sophisticated steel-grey ductless chimney with a baffle filter and a charcoal filter. It has superior air filtration abilities. It roots out airborne oil droplets, cooking smells, smoke, moisture and other impurities present in the kitchen air.

The Sunflame Rapid Auto-Clean 90 has a dual filtration process. First the air is made to pass through the multiple overlapping layers of the baffle filter at which stage the oil and grease are taken out of the air stream. Then the remaining fumes are directed through the activated carbon filter. This filter has odor-cancelling properties.

Activated carbon has an enhanced surface area with millions and millions of tiny pores. This magnified area attracts passing gaseous particles and makes them stick to its surface by a process known as adsorption. Activated carbon is very effective in fighting bad odors and pungent spicy aromas given off during cooking.

The inclusion of the baffle and carbon filters makes the Sunflame kitchen chimney a top choice for Indian kitchens. It is the best chimney in India for ‘tadka’ and ‘chownk’ style of cooking which involves frying a whole bunch of spices and aromatics in hot oil. This kind of cooking gives off a lot of oil and spice-infused smoke which need to be immediately removed in order to keep your kitchen and house grease-free. And that is where the Sunflame chimney comes in.

The appliance has a stainless steel and glass body. It has an airflow rate of 1100m3/h and is suitable for 3 to 5 burner cooktops. As it lacks a ducting system, what it essentially does is it takes out the grease and odors from the air and releases the recycled air back into the house. This kind of chimney is best suited for kitchens that do not have an exhaust outlet.

The hood of the chimney has a curved glass panel and touch control buttons. It has a pair of LED lights for brightening up the stove area. Max noise level is 62 dB. The chimney has a heat-driven auto-clean technology. It has an inbuilt oil collector that collects the excess oil and holds it until the next cleaning. The baffle filter is removable and washable. It needs cleaning every six months.

Key Features:

  • Ductless wall-mounted kitchen chimney.
  • Baffle filter, activated carbon filter.
  • Suitable for kitchens without exhaust vents.
  • 90 cm wide, 1100m3/h suction rate.
  • Touch control panel, 2 LED lamps, heat-based auto-clean technology.
  • Ideal for Indian cooking.

Sunflame Innova Ductless Auto-Clean Kitchen Chimney

Another kitchen chimney we would like you to check out is the Sunflame Innova Auto-Clean chimney. It is a ductless chimney with self-cleaning ability. It is perfect for kitchens that lack a proper outlet for venting smoke.

The Sunflame Innova is 90 cm wide. It is suitable for hobs with 3 to 5 burners. It is a wall-mounted ductless chimney. It sucks up the smoke emitted during cooking, removes the impurities present in it, and releases the purified air back into the room.

The chimney has a double filtration process. It has a baffle filter which intercepts oil and grease particles, and a charcoal filter which removes odors and gaseous contaminants. The baffle filter prevents oil deposition on surfaces in the kitchen like walls, ceilings, shelves and cabinets. It is useful for keeping your kitchen and house clean and grime-free.

The charcoal filter combats cooking smells and pungent aromas through a process known as adsorption. The carbon in the filter has an increased surface area which makes the gas molecules stick to the surface. This plucks them out of the air current and consequently reduces odors. Once the polluted air has undergone the dual filtration process, it is circulated back into the kitchen. This kind of filtration is best suited for kitchens that do not have an outlet to expel smoke.

Kitchen Chimney Buying Guide

Before we discuss the factors to consider while buying a kitchen chimney, let us take a look at the types of chimneys. Types of chimneys can vary based on their installation, ducting system, cleaning method and size. Understanding the types can help us decide which kind of chimney is best suited to our unique kitchen and cooking needs. Once we have decided the type we want, we can move on to the other important factors to consider when choosing a model.

Let’s begin.

Types Of Kitchen Chimneys Based On Installation

Wall-Mounted Chimney

These types of chimneys, as the name suggests, are mounted to walls. They are affixed to the wall closest to the gas stove. They can be ducted or non-ducted. The hood hangs over the cooktop covering the burners completely.

Some of the best kitchen chimneys in India are wall-mounted chimneys. They are also the most common kind. You have plenty of options to choose from as every brand has at least a few models of wall-mounted chimneys in their catalog. Wall-mounted chimneys are very effectual in Indian kitchens. They are great at sucking out smoke, steam and oil fumes.

If you wish to install a wall-mounted chimney, your gas stove must be adjacent to a wall i.e. it must be on a slab that runs along a wall. Wall-mounted chimneys are less expensive. They do not entail a lot of ducting and piping as they are attached to the wall, and hence, closer to the outer environment. Their ducts are shorter too as they do not have to travel a long distance to expel smoke into the outdoors.

Wall-mounted chimneys are available in all kinds of sizes and shapes. There are chimneys with 60 cm and 90 cm hoods. There are models with flat, curved and pyramid hoods. There are glass, plastic and stainless steel housings. Some chimneys have baffle filters and some cassette. Ductless variants also have an additional activated carbon filter.

Island Chimney

An island chimney hangs from the ceiling in the middle of a kitchen. It is not a very common type of chimney. It is more suitable for large spacious kitchens. The cooktop is located at the centre of the room and not adjacent to a wall. The chimney hangs above it from the ceiling, giving the impression of being suspended in mid-air.

Island chimneys have a very minimalistic design. They impart a classy touch to the kitchen. They are, however, rather expensive. You might spot them in fancy kitchens in interior décor catalogs and cooking shows on TV. They are more suitable for large homes where the kitchens are bigger and more sophisticated.

An island chimney requires an elaborate ducting and piping system as the smoke has to travel a good distance to get out of the room. Since they are located away from the sides of a room, a proper channel has to be built through the ceiling to let out the smoke.

Island chimneys are not advisable for Indian kitchens. Indian kitchens are normally small in size and the gas stove is usually placed next to a wall. Hence, an island chimney wouldn’t work due to layout constraints.

Island chimneys come in a wide range of sizes and shapes. They might have baffle, cassette and carbon filters.

Built-in Chimney

Built-in chimneys are built into the wall of a kitchen. They hang directly below the wall cabinets. Only the hood is exposed. The ducts and other parts of the chimney remain hidden in the wall or cabinetry.

Built-in chimneys require some amount of woodwork to keep it concealed from view. It is designed for modern modular kitchens where the chimney is more compact and the hood less prominent. The idea is to blend the chimney hood with the interior décor and cabinetry of the kitchen so that it looks like it is a part of the paneling. The ducts mostly run through the cabinetry above the hobtop.

Built-in chimneys are of course pricey. You have to plan ahead to incorporate them into your kitchen set-up.

Corner Chimney

A corner chimney is designed to be installed in a corner of the kitchen. The gas stove is located below it in the same corner adjacent to the wall. The installation is similar to a wall-mounted chimney’s. The only difference is that it is located in a corner and not away from it in the middle of the wall like a regular wall-mounted variant.

Types Of Chimneys Based On Ducting System

Ducted Chimney

Ducted chimneys are the commonest type of chimneys. They have ducts, also called exhausts pipes, for letting out smoke and moisture gathered up from the cooking vessel. The ducts are flexible and they are attached to the wall. They have vents or outlets outside the exterior walls of a house. They channel cooking fumes out of the house through these vents.

Ducted chimneys have a higher suction power than non-ducted models. They have air filters for trapping oil and solid food particles. Most ducted chimneys either have baffle filters or cassette filters made of stainless steel or aluminum. These filters separate the smoke and steam from the grease and solids, expelling the former two out of the house and retaining the latter two in the filter mesh for later cleaning. They also remove heat and keep the kitchen temperature relatively cool. However, they are not good at reducing cooking smells and aromas.

Ducted chimneys are easy to maintain. Baffle filters are washable and they last a lifetime. Cassette filters are also washable but they require some maintenance. They need to be washed once every week or so to remove the condensed soot. Baffle filters, on the other hand, need to be washed only once every 3 or 4 months. Also, baffle filters are more adept at expelling oil and spices. Hence, they are better suited to Indian cooking methods.

Ductless Chimney

Ductless chimneys do not have ducts. They remove smoke, oil and solid particles from the fumes sucked up from the hob, and release the residual air back into the kitchen. They essentially recycle the air, remove impurities present it in and route it back to the indoor environment.

Ductless chimneys have a special activated carbon filter for tackling cooking odors. The smell-inducing particles are intercepted by the carbon filter and the air vented out is odor-free. This is the most important feature of ductless chimneys. They also have another filter like a baffle filter or a cassette filter for removing food particles and grease. While the baffle or cassette filter can be washed and reused, the activated carbon filter cannot be washed, and must be replaced once every few months, depending on use. So, ductless chimneys have a higher overhead cost.

Ductless chimneys are not good at lowering heat inside a kitchen as the hot air is released back into the indoor air. They also have a low suction force as compared to ducted chimneys. They are, however, good for the aesthetics of the kitchen. As they do not have any bulky exhaust pipes, they fit right in with the woodwork of the kitchen. Very little changes are required to be made to the interiors and walls. There is certainly no drilling needed to make vents in the exterior walls. In other words, your kitchen stays intact.

For Indian kitchens that witness a lot of oil-heavy cooking, ductless chimneys are not very advisable. They have a low airflow rate which can make indoors smoky, grimy and sooty. They are more suitable for light cooking methods that do not involve a lot of oil.

Types Of Chimneys Based On Cleaning Method

Auto-Clean Chimney

Auto-clean chimneys clean themselves. They have a built-in oil collector that collects the oil trapped in the filter mesh. With the mere push of a button, a heating coil inside the chimney is activated, and it heats up to liquefy the condensed grease trapped in the filter panels. The liquid oil then dribbles out and collects in the oil tray attached to the chimney. Once the tray is full, it can be removed and cleaned with water and soap.

Auto-clean chimneys are easy to maintain. Their filters do not need to be washed very often as most of the oil is removed on a regular basis and stored in the oil tray. Even when the filters are washed, they don’t have to be scrubbed a lot to remove hardened grease. The oil comes off easily with mild washing.

Auto-clean chimneys have more suction power than non-auto-clean chimneys. Their filter panels are less clogged at any given point in time which helps them take in more smoke and vent it out faster. As a result, there is less pressure on the motor, the filters perform better and the chimney lasts long.

Auto-clean chimneys can be a little expensive. But, they are highly recommended for Indian kitchens as they are excellent at handling oily smoke.

Chimney Without Auto-Clean Function

These chimneys do not have auto-clean technology. Therefore, they lack the benefits that come with an auto-clean model. Like self-cleaning and less frequent washings. Also, since oil clogs the pores of the filter panel, they are harder to clean and need to be soaked in hot water for a few minutes to soften the grime.

Non-auto-clean chimneys have less suction than auto-clean variants. But, they are suitable for Indian cooking and are effective in ejecting smoke and oil.

Types Of Chimneys Based On Size

60-cm Chimneys

Chimneys with a width of 60 cm are the most common type. They are suitable for small to medium-sized kitchens with 2, 3 or 4 burner hobs. They work well in Indian kitchens.

90-cm Chimneys

Chimneys with a width of 90 cm are a little more powerful than 60 cm chimneys. They are suitable for large kitchens where there’s plenty of cooking happening. They have powerful motors for rapid smoke expulsion. They are designed to handle smoke from large cooktops with 3, 4 or 5 burners.

Pre-purchase Considerations for Kitchen Chimneys

Now that we know the different types of chimneys available in the market, let us understand what features and functions we should look for when selecting a chimney.

What size should the chimney be ?

When it comes to size of the chimney, the thumb rule is that the chimney should be larger than the stove or hob. The canopy or hood of the chimney should cover the gas stove completely from edge to edge on all four sides so that no smoke escapes. In case of a wall-mounted chimney, for instance, if the width (length of the hood as seen from the front, left end tip to right end tip) or depth (distance from the front edge of the chimney to the wall at the back) of the hood is less than the width or depth of the hob, it will fail to vent all the smoke produced during cooking. Some of the smoke will inevitably escape into the kitchen and eventually settle on surfaces like walls, cabinets and appliances, making them look grubby. To avoid this, make sure the kitchen hood is as big as, if not larger, than the hob.

What should be the suction power of the chimney ?

Indian kitchens need chimneys with higher suction power. The suction of a chimney indicates the amount of air it can throw out in an hour. It is generally expressed in cubic meters per hour. The thumb rule says the suction of a kitchen chimney should be at least ten times the volume of the kitchen. This means it should be able to circulate the entire volume of air inside a kitchen ten times in an hour.

Allow us to explain. Say a kitchen has a length of 4 meters, breadth of 4 meters and height of 3 meters. That would make the volume of the kitchen:

Volume of the kitchen = Length x Breadth x Height = 4 m x 4 m x 3 m = 48 m3

Now, ten times this figure is:

48 m3 x 10 = 480 m3

Therefore, the suction capacity of a chimney for a kitchen of these dimensions should be equal to or greater than 480m3/h. That will ensure the kitchen stays smoke-free.

What should be the distance between the stove and the chimney hood ?

Before you buy a chimney, make sure you are able to maintain a suitable distance between the hood and the hob. The ideal distance for optimum ventilation is between 26 inches and 30 inches. If it is less than 26 inches, there are chances of the chimney catching fire. If it is more than 30 inches, the suction power will be affected. So, look for a model which when installed is able to maintain this optimal distance from the cooktop.

What type of filters should the chimney have ?

If you cook Indian cuisines in your kitchen, you should opt for a chimney with baffle filters. Baffle filters, as mentioned already, are removable, washable and reusable. They can easily be cleaned in hot water and dishwashing liquid. They can even be put in a dish-washer. Baffle filters are excellent at removing oil fumes. They separate the smoke from the oil droplets, expelling the smoke and retaining the oil in the filter mesh for later removal.

If you cook less often and with less oil, you can go for a chimney with cassette filters. You can also try ductless chimney with carbon filters. These kinds of filters are better suited for light cooking.

If you want to eliminate cooking odors from your house, you should look for a chimney that has, in addition to a baffle or cassette filter, an activated carbon filter. It will ensure all aromas are sucked out from the indoor air and your home smells fresh at times. However, the downside of carbon filters is that they cannot be washed and have to be replaced every few months.

Design of the hood

The hood of a chimney can be flat, pyramidal and curved in shape. It can also be slanted and hang over the hob at an angle. It might be composed of glass, plastic, or stainless steel. Hoods are entirely a matter of personal choice. You can select any model you like.

3-Way Suction

Some chimneys offer 3-way suction. They remove smoke faster as there are more inlets to draw in the smoke. If you cook a lot, you can opt for a 3-way suction chimney.

Other Features

Apart from the aforementioned features, there are other things to look for in a chimney like power consumption, control panel, illumination, fan speed, motor type and maintenance.

Power Consumption

The power consumption of a chimney directly reflects in your electricity bill. So be careful what you choose. While a low-power chimney might be less expensive and have a lower monthly operating cost, it might not give you the kind of suction you are looking for. On the other hand, if you go for a high-power chimney, you might get excellent suction, but your initial investment will be high, as will be your monthly electricity bill.

Control Panel

Basic entry-level chimneys have push buttons while high-end chimneys have touch control panels. Push buttons have a tendency to gather soot and they might look dirty if not cleaned regularly. Touch control panels, on the other hand, attract less soot, and are easier to wipe, clean and maintain. They are also better looking than push buttons and give the chimney a chic look. But, the control panel does not affect the performance of the chimney. So, you can choose whatever suits your budget.

Illumination

When it comes to brightening up the cooking area, go for lamps that are luminous and energy-efficient. Note the wattage of the bulbs. They must be able to provide ample illumination without consuming a lot of power.

Motor Type

For kitchen chimneys, copper motors are preferable. The housing of the motor should be made from flame retardant material to safeguard it against sparks and fire. The circuit board of the motor must be protected against overload and overheating.

Maintenance

The chimney you choose should be easy to clean. You should be able to do it yourself with common house tools and not seek the services of a trained professional.
