A nebulizer is a drug-administering device. It converts liquid medicine into an ultra-fine aerosol mist so that the patient can inhale it comfortably. A nebulizer delivers the medicine directly to the lungs allowing the blood to absorb it rapidly. It provides quick relief from respiratory disorders and is an effective means of treatment for such conditions.
Doctors routinely prescribe nebulizer for patients of asthma, bronchitis, coughing, wheezing, and other chronic breathing problems.
Our team recently did a market research of the best nebulizers in the Indian market. They studied the performance, reliability, features, and design of the products, and compiled a list of the top 10 nebulizer machines in India. We have shared the list in the following pages. Hope you find it useful.

Once you are done, turn off the switch and remove the mask.
Few things to keep in mind. The green cap inside the medicine chamber is responsible for creating the mist. Ensure this cap is properly fitted inside the chamber. You don’t want any leakages in the connections between the mask and medicine chamber, medicine chamber and air tube, and air tube and nebulizer outlet. Also, avoid bending the air tube as it might disrupt the flow.
While using the nebulizer, do not tilt the mask it as it can cause the medicine to spill out. Find a comfortable place to sit and place the mask securely over your face. What is a Nebulizer?
A nebulizer is a drug-administering machine that converts liquid medicine into a fine mist so that it can be directly inhaled into the lungs. It comprises of an air compressor, a medicine cup, a tube and a face mask or mouthpiece. Depending on the type of nebulizer, compressed air, oxygen or ultrasonic waves might be used to turn liquid into gas. In a typical jet nebulizer, the nebulizer cup holds the medicine while the air compressor pumps in pressurized air through the fluid at high velocity turning it into an inhalable aerosol which is breathed in through the mouthpiece or mask.
In certain treatments, nebulizers are more effective than taking medicine the traditional way through the mouth. It delivers the drug directly and more quickly to the lungs for absorption by the bloodstream. It provides faster relief and you feel better almost instantly. A nebulizer is also easier to use as all you have to do is breathe in the vapor. The drug travels through your mouth and nose, and starts its action as soon as it hits the lungs.
Who needs a Nebulizer?
Nebulizers are prescribed for patients suffering from respiratory disorders like asthma, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cystic fibrosis. They are designed for people of all ages, including infants.
Types of Nebulizers
Nebulizers are of 3 types:
- Ultrasonic wave
- Vibrating mesh
Jet nebulizers, also called atomizers, are the oldest and most common type of nebulizers. They consist of a nebulizer cup connected to an air compressor through a tube. The compressor pushes out oxygen or compressed air which passes through the fluid medicine at high speed transforming it to an atomized mist that can be inhaled. Jet nebulizers are the mostly used in hospitals. They are not very quiet and produce around 60dB sound. They weigh roughly 635 g. They are larger and slightly heavier than standard pressurized metered dose inhalers (pMDI). But, they are less expensive than pMDIs. So, for those who need to take their medicines regularly, a jet nebulizer is more pocket-friendly.
Ultrasonic wave nebulizers are a more modern variant. They consist of an electronic oscillator that generates a high-frequency ultrasonic wave which causes a piezoelectric element to vibrate. This element stays in contact with the liquid medicine and its high-frequency vibration turns the fluid into vapor. Ultrasonic wave nebulizers are portable handheld devices. They weigh around 170 g a piece. As they rely on ultrasonic waves, they produce very less noise and are almost silent. However, they heat up the medical fluid, which is not desirable, and they are more expensive than jet nebulizers.
Vibrating Mesh is the latest technology used in making nebulizers. In it, a membrane or mesh with 1000 to 7000 laser-drilled holes vibrates on the surface of the liquid, pushing out a mist of vaporized medication through the holes. The device is silent, portable and handheld. It does not waste medicine. Unlike an ultrasonic wave nebulizer, it does not cause the medicine to heat up. The only drawback is its price. It is the most expensive kind of nebulizer.
How to use a Nebulizer?
Before you use a nebulizer, understand from your doctor the correct way to use one. Find out if there are any specific dos and don’ts. Read the user manual carefully and take note of any special requirements that might be mentioned in the manual.
Here is a simple step-by-step explanation of how to use a nebulizer.
First, wash your hands with soap and water, and towel them dry.
Then, place the nebulizer on a flat hard surface that can support its weight. Plug it into a wall socket if it is powered by electricity. If it is a battery-driven device, pop in the batteries as instructed.
Now assemble the contraption. Connect the tubing to the nebulizer cup and the air compressor. Attach the mask or mouthpiece to the cup/top piece.
Measure out the medication with a clean measuring beaker and pour it into the nebulizer cup. However, this may not be necessary as most nebulizer drugs come in pre-measured pre-packaged units for one-time use. Close the cup lid tightly to avoid spills.
Next, sit upright on a chair and place the mouthpiece in your mouth. Keep your lips sealed around the mouthpiece to prevent the vapor from leaking out. If you are using a mask, secure it firmly over your nose and mouth. Make sure the elastic band is safely strapped across the back of your head. If you are using it for your child, you might want to sit them on your lap while you administer the medicine.
Once the mask/mouthpiece is in place, inhale slowly through your mouth and nose. Take long deep breaths. Try and hold each breath for about 2 to 3 seconds to allow the medicine to enter the airways. Do not hurry. Make yourself comfortable. Sit back, relax and breathe normally.
The device might take around 10 to 15 minutes to fully dispense the medicine. Keep inhaling till all the medicine has been used up. If the fluid sticks to the sides of the cup, you might want to gently shake off the droplets to allow it be vaporized.
When all the medicine has been inhaled, turn off the nebulizer and remove the plug from the socket.
Wash the mouthpiece/mask and the nebulizer cup with clean water. Allow the parts to dry fully before the next treatment.
How to purchase a Nebulizer?
You will need a doctor’s prescription to purchase a nebulizer and the medication it administers. If you wish to purchase only the device, you can do it without a prescription. You can buy it from a pharmacy or online. However, you will still need an authorized physician’s prescription for buying the medication for the nebulizer. Some medicines require specific types of nebulizers. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist to understand what kind of nebulizer you need to use before you make a purchase.
Kinds of Medicines That Need a Nebulizer
Following are some of the types of medicines that need a nebulizer.
These are medicines that open up the airways and increase airflow to the lungs. They dilate the bronchi and bronchioles, allowing air to pass through with minimal resistance. They are generally prescribed for people with COPD, asthma and similar respiratory diseases.
Sterile Saline Solution
A nebulizer might be used to administer a sterile saline solution to ease up the airways. The solution makes it easier for the patient to cough up mucus stuck in the throat and lungs.
Certain antibiotics need a nebulizer for administration. People with respiratory tract infections are generally prescribed such antibiotics.
